New Year word scramble guide

How to solve a New Year word scramble

The rules, a New Year word taken apart step by step, the New Year words that hide another word, and which sheet to print for a party, the first day back at school or a senior center.

How to play a New Year word scramble

  1. Each line shows the letters of one New Year word in a jumbled order.
  2. Use every letter exactly once to make the word, and write it on the line or in the boxes.
  3. On Easy the first letter is already in front, and a word bank, if printed, lists every answer.
  4. The answer key is on the second page.

A word scramble is also called a word jumble or an unscramble-the-words sheet; they are the same puzzle.

How to unscramble a New Year word, step by step

Here is a Hard scramble from this page: RHLEAGTU. On Hard no letter is in its place and no two letters that sit together in the answer are left together, so there is nothing to read. Take it apart instead.

  1. Count the letters and find the vowels. 8 letters and only 3 vowels, A, U and E, so the consonants must sit together in pairs.
  2. Try a common ending. The letters include E and R, so put ER at the end. That leaves HLAGTU.
  3. Look for pairs that go together. HLAGTU holds GH. Set them side by side and LATU is all that is left to place.
  4. Read it against the theme. Something on a New Year list, with GH and ER on the end: LAUGHTER.

New Year words that hide another word

Some New Year words are made of the same letters as another word. That matters twice on a scramble: the builder must never print the other word as the scramble, because a child would think it was already solved, and a solver who writes the other word has used the right letters.

Short words are where it bites. Shuffle HUGS at random and about one time in 8 it comes out as a real word (GUSH, SUGH and UGHS). TIME, which turns up on other New Year sheets and is left off this list, does it about one time in 8 (EMIT, ITEM and MITE).

13 more list words share their letters only with rarer words, such as ERECTABLE for CELEBRATE and CREESH for CHEERS. The builder treats them the same way.

  • None of these is ever printed as a scramble. The builder knows every arrangement of every list word that spells a word in a 172,823-word dictionary and skips them.
  • The theme decides the answer. The sheet says New Year at the top, so BEGIN, not BEING, is the answer. If a child writes the other word, the letters are right and the word just is not a New Year one, and the answer key names it beside the answer, so whoever marks the sheet can see why.
  • Easy settles most of them. With the first letter already in front, DREAM, HORNS, HUGS, STARS, START and TOAST can only be the New Year word. BEGIN and BEING, and FRIENDS and FINDERS start with the same letter, so for those a word bank is what rules the other word out.
  • No two words with the same letters share a sheet, so no scramble on a sheet has two New Year answers.

The classroom list and the full list

The default list leaves out the three words that belong to the grown-up party: CHAMPAGNE, TOAST and CHEERS. Everything else is about the countdown, the calendar and the year ahead, so the same sheet works at a family party on New Year’s Eve and in a classroom on the first morning back. The full list puts the three back for an adults’ party.

Neither list has a year in it. A sheet titled with this year is out of date by February; one built from JANUARY, MIDNIGHT and RESOLUTION works every winter.

  • Toast

The same lists as the New Year word search. Every word is four to twelve letters, so none has an obvious three-letter twin like RAT, TAR and ART.

New Year word scramble games

Race the countdownHand out the sheet face down ten minutes before midnight, or before noon at a family party, and start everyone at once. Whoever has the most words when the countdown ends wins, and the answer key settles it.
Turn an answer into a resolutionWhen the sheet is done, ask everyone to pick one answer, GOALS, PLANS, PROMISE, HOPE or DREAM, and write one sentence about the year ahead that uses it. A resolution is easier to start from a word than from a blank page.
First morning backPut the classroom sheet on the desks before the bell on the first day of January. It settles a room that has been on vacation for two weeks and gives everyone the same thing to talk about.
Looking back, looking aheadAsk which answers are about the year that is ending, like MEMORIES and DECEMBER, and which are about the one starting, like JANUARY and BEGIN. It takes two minutes and has no wrong answers.

Free to print, and what this page does not do

Every sheet is scrambled in your browser and there is no account. More in how we make puzzle packs. The terms of use let teachers, families, churches and senior centers print and copy the sheets and their answer keys.

  • The pictures come in color, as outlines to color in, or not at all, and sit on the puzzle pages only, never on the answer key. Ink saving thins the lines further.
  • Your own words are scrambled with the same rules but are not checked against the dictionary.
  • There are no picture clues for children who cannot read yet, and no bingo cards.
