    Which Halloween words frighten younger children, and how this page handles it

    What makes it worth building properly is that the same list does not suit all of those rooms. A word list assembled for a party of nine-year-olds is the wrong list for a reception class, and the difference is not reading level. It is subject matter.

    Every seasonal word list on the internet treats Halloween vocabulary as one bucket. It is not. PUMPKIN, CANDY and COSTUME are the fun half. SKELETON, GRAVEYARD, COFFIN, ZOMBIE and NIGHTMARE are a different proposition for a four or five-year-old, and a teacher who hands out a sheet without reading it first can spend the rest of the lesson on it.

    The words below are split into two lists rather than one, and the gentler list is the default on this page. It is not simply the short words: SKELETON is easy to spell and hard to sit with, while BROOMSTICK is long and completely harmless. The split is by what the word is about, not by how difficult it is to find.

    The full list is one click away and the page does not hide it, because for a Year 5 Halloween party the scary half is the point. What it does not do is make that the default and leave a reception teacher to find out at the photocopier.

    Both lists are checked when this site is built: every word is four to twelve letters, no word contains another word on the same list, and the subset is a genuine subset. A word inside another word has no honest answer key, so that check fails the build rather than being repaired quietly at print time.

    Four ways to use this sheet that are not "hand it out"

    Ask for the words backFinding SPIDER in a grid is recognition, not vocabulary. Once a sheet is finished, ask for five of the words in a sentence, or for the three that describe a sound rather than a thing. The grid did the engagement; the follow-up does the learning.
    Run it as a costume promptHand out the sheet a week before a dress-up day and ask each child to circle the word they want to be. It turns a filler activity into a decision they have already made, which is the part that usually happens in a rush the night before.
    Use the large print option for an activity hourHalloween vocabulary is unusually good for older solvers because almost all of it is concrete and long established. Large print with a 12x12 grid and the Easy setting keeps the words running across and down only, which matters more than grid size for anyone working with a magnifier.
    Set the expert grid as a two-person raceOn Expert the empty squares are filled with letters taken from the word list itself, so scanning for an unusual letter stops working. Two solvers on identical sheets is a fairer race on this setting than on any other, because nobody can shortcut it.

    Picking the settings for the room you are in

    • Easy hides words across and down only and never reverses one, which makes finding them letter matching rather than reading. It is the setting that decides whether a young child can do the sheet at all.
    • Grid size is not difficulty. A bigger grid is a longer hunt through more filler: the share of squares that are part of an answer falls from 57 per cent at 10x10 to 37 per cent at 20x20.
    • Expert fills the empty squares with letters taken from the word list itself, so hunting for an unusual letter stops working. It is the only setting that resists that shortcut.
    • Large print with a smaller grid beats normal print with a bigger one for anyone working with a magnifier, and the two settings are independent.

    What this page does not do

    There are no pictures. Every puzzle on this site is generated from rules rather than drawn, which is what lets the builder make unlimited sheets with checked answers, and the cost is that a seasonal page here is words on a grid rather than a decorated border.

    The list is also fixed rather than editable in place. If you want your own halloween vocabulary, the custom list option takes a pasted list and tells you which words it had to drop and why.
